Frequently Asked Questions

What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy or ‘male sterilisation’ is a very simple and reliable method of contraception with more than 99% success rate (NHS: UK).

How is vasectomy performed?

During a vasectomy operation a piece of the sperm carrying tube (Vas) is taken out on either side just above each testicle and the ends are sealed using cautery. It is performed under a fast acting local anaesthetic (meaning that you will be awake during the procedure) and takes about 20-30 min to perform. We use a novel advanced method called ‘no-scalpel technique’. This method bears considerably less complications, virtually no pain or sutures and has a much faster recovery time.

Is vasectomy reliable?

Vasectomy is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, once the semen is clear of sperm. It is a much more effective method of contraception as compared to tubal ligation and the contraceptive pill.

Is vasectomy right for me?

The decision to have a vasectomy should be taken seriously and go ahead only if you are certain that you do not want to have any more children, or any children at all. If you have any doubts, consider another method of contraception until you are completely sure. You shouldn’t make the decision about having a vasectomy, immediately after a crisis or a big change in your life.

How soon after the surgery can I have sexual intercourse?

When comfortable, usually about a week after the surgery. You MUST use another method of birth control until your follow-up sperm-count test at 12 weeks confirms “All Clear”

Will it affect my sexual function/ability to ejaculate?

Vasectomy will not affect your libido (sex drive), Sex hormone production, sexual function or ability to ejaculate in any way. The only thing that changes is that your semen will no longer have any sperm in it.

Are there any risks?

Vasectomy is a very common and safe procedure. However, like all surgical procedures Vasectomy also involves some risks which Dr Jayaswal will discuss during the counselling session in detail.

How soon after the surgery can I return to work?

It depends on your work. You can usually return to work about 2 days after a vasectomy, but should not do heavy lifting for at least a week and no sports activity for 2 weeks after the procedure to prevent any post operative complications. Dr Jayaswal will again discuss these in details when you book for counselling.

How much does it cost:

The cost of a vasectomy varies. If you have a Medicare card, some of the cost will be covered by Medicare, but as with most other private medical treatments or day surgery procedures, there is an out of pocket cost. However, we have kept the price at an affordable and a competitive level for patients.

You can book an assessment without referral by phoning Murrumba Downs Medical & Dental Centre on (07) 3049 9000 and asking for a Vasectomy assessment appointment.
